Don't Miss This: Community Builders Workshop Coming to Shoal Lake This May

Registration Now Open | May 11, 2026 | Prairie Mountain Regional Museum

Community Futures Westman is excited to announce the 2026 Community Builders Workshop Series, and this year's event is one you won't want to miss. On May 11th, 2026, we're bringing internationally recognized community development expert Peter Kenyon to Shoal Lake for a full-day workshop exploring Creative Communities and the Experience Economy.

What Is the Experience Economy and Why Does It Matter to Your Community?

The experience economy is reshaping how consumers spend their time and money. Rather than simply buying products or services, today's customers are increasingly seeking out meaningful experiences and the communities and businesses that understand this are thriving. This workshop will dig into what that means in practical terms for our region: from tourism and hospitality to retail, artisan businesses, and small-scale manufacturing. Whether you are a business owner, economic development officer, municipal leader, or community champion, this day is designed for you.

Meet the Keynote Speaker: Peter Kenyon

Peter Kenyon is a globally respected figure in community development, known for his work helping rural and regional communities unlock their creative potential and build stronger local economies. He brings real-world examples, contagious enthusiasm, and a genuine belief in the power of communities to shape their own futures

What to Expect on the Day

The workshop runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is packed with practical content, conversations, and tools you can take home and use. Morning sessions will cover the philosophy and real-world application of experience economy thinking including success stories from communities just like ours. And explore the growing role of small-scale manufacturing and artisan businesses in creating vibrant local economies. After lunch, the focus shifts to action. Attendees will participate in a community mapping exercise to identify existing assets and untapped opportunities, work through SWOT-style community assessments, and take part in an Open Space Workshop to connect with others who share their interests and passions. You will leave with a Workshop Toolkit including asset mapping worksheets, business model canvas templates for small manufacturing and artisan ventures, and action planning resources.
